Hiring citizens with disabilities helps everyone….
By Jeri Barry
Recently, in celebration of a Take Your Legislator to Work campaign, Senator Mike Ellis and Representative Dean Kaufert visited Zuppas to meet our employee Aaron. Aaron is one of many employees that Peter has employed through the Goodwill program and other vocational support services through the years. His success at Zuppas shines a positive light on the valuable work citizens with disabilities contribute to Wisconsin. During their visit, the legislators were able to see firsthand the great outcomes of public programs which assist those with developmental disabilities and witness the power of community-integrated employment for these individuals.
We are very grateful to have Aaron on our staff. He is an inspiration to us all in that he refuses to let his disability get in the way of having a productive life. Aaron joined the Zuppas team in 2o12 and according to his mom, the Zuppas staff has become like a family to him. Aaron’s mom shared with me that from supporting him at Special Olympic events to including him in a summer outing, Peter and the Zuppas employees have been more than just co-workers to Aaron. She believes the job is a perfect fit for him and that it has changed his life for the better. Employing developmentally disabled individuals is something Peter has done since opening in 1999 and is definitely something he is committed to doing in the future. When these individuals find employment they become contributing members of our local community while providing inspiration to our staff and customers. Talk about a win win!
